Experimental Study on Domestic Solar Still Desalination with Cotton Gauze: An Approach to Field Model

A new innovative method of water desalination using domestic solar still with the presence of cotton gauze resulted in increasing the output and efficiency of the distillate. The production rate of this new still with cotton gauze was observed to be 4.285 lit/m2/day. On the other hand, without cotton gauze conventional solar still gives the rate of 2.925 lit/m2/day. However, with cotton gauze production rate is increased to 1.36 lit/m2/day. The parameters glass temperature, ambient temperature, solar radiation and distillate output, recorded during March–April in Puducherry, India, are considered to play a major role in this study. The increase in thermal conductivity leads to increase in evaporation rate, and simultaneously, the condensation rate was increased ultimately leading to the increased output. The glass solar still with cotton gauze is more efficient and cost-effective than basic conventional still and should be promoted for coastal regions of Puducherry.
